What does “Ichthys” mean?

Ichthys is the Greek word for fish. The Greek word Ichthys (ΙΧΘΥΣ) represents the first letters in the words of the Greek phrase meaning “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.”

Since Christianity was an underground movement for the first 300 years, the Ichthys (or Ichthys fish) was a secret sign that allowed followers of Jesus to identify themselves to one another. Upon meeting someone, a Christian would quietly make a single arched mark in the earth. If the stranger were Christian, he would complete the sign of the fish by adding a reverse arc.

Today, the outline of the fish (often called the “Ichthys fish” or simply “Jesus fish”), or the letters in GREEK (ΙΧΘΥΣ) is a worldwide symbol of one’s faith in Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.

By naming my practice “Ichthys Yoga”,
I acknowledge that Jesus Christ is God’s Son, my Savior.

The Lotus Flower as a symbol for yoga

The lotus flower serves as a symbolic representation of yoga without delving into spiritual connotations. It emerges from muddy, murky waters to bloom gracefully on the surface. This natural process mirrors the transformative journey that individuals experience through yoga.

The lotus’s gradual ascent reflects the step-by-step progression inherent in yoga, where practitioners develop strength, flexibility, balance, and peace through dedicated and mindful practice. Additionally, the lotus’s ability to thrive in various conditions reflects the adaptable nature of yoga, accommodating practitioners of all body types, ages, skill levels and backgrounds.

A logo that combines Christian faith and yoga

When designing the logo to represent my practice, the image of the Ichthys fish (representing my Christian faith) is combined with the lotus flower (representing yoga). Naturally, the Ichthys fish is central and prominent in the design, just as my Christian faith is the most important thing in my life.
